Wasn't Meant To Be

Sad to see the Bruins season end last night. It was a tough series and I guess you gotta hand it to Holtby and the Caps defense. Now, "Let's Go Celtics!"

On today's show we played the clip of the Capitals play-by-play guy. His quote was, "Say good morning, say good afternoon, say good night Boston. The king is dead!" Allll rightyyy then. I like our radio guys Dave Goucher and Bob Beers, but we can just imagine what the rest of the country would think about Jack Edwards.

Also today we had a story out of New York City. Some high schools are telling students that get accepted into prestigious colleges that they cannot wear sweat shirts with the schools name because it might hurt the feelings of other students who got rejected. Another is banning face book postings. Come on! Shouldn't we celebrate? Don't we need to learn how to handle disappointment? We're talking about 17 and 18 year olds!

Facebook is ruining high school reunions. With millions and millions of people on Face book, there's no new news when you meet up with former classmates. We hear all about their jobs, kids and surgeries.

On tomorrow's show....19% of Americans say they can't remember the last time they had fun. That's sad. We'll talk about that.

A high school student outside of Philadelphia had her date cancel out on her for the prom, now the school says she can't go without a date. We'll have a story on that after 7.

Here's a sneak peak at the Impossible Question: This task takes the average man 5 minutes. The average woman gets it done in 15 minutes. What is it? We'll take your calls at 7:38am.

Now on to my post-Bruins nap.

Tuesday

Boy it was cold this morning! The wind blowin' with temps in the 50s. The light jacket was NOT a good idea.

Hey but the Sox won! They've turned it around! All is forgiven! Well.....maybe not. We'll see if they can string anything together here with games in Minnesota and Chicago.

On the show today we saluted the students in New Bedford that were in the ROV competition in Manassas, Virginia. The NB kids placed 9th overall. They've been #1 or #2 in Massachusetts competitions.

We had a winner on Timeline Tuesday. Here are the clues:
    1. "Sesame Street" aired for the first time.
    2. The NY Jets beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.
    3. And the internet was invented by the Dept. of Defense NOT Al Gore.
Jackie from Mattapoisett was our winner. 1969 was the year.

And we had some fun today with the Beach Boys. They are out on tour again and in their late 60s or early 70s. We figure it's time to update some of their classics:
-"I Get Around (But Much Slower)
    - "Help Me Rhonda (No, Really, Help ME! Rhonda!)

People in the News today featured the story of the hunter who mistook his girlfriend for a hog and shot her! My question----when she recovers do you tell your girlfriend you thought she was a hog? She'll shoot you.

On "The Voice" Pip and James Massone were eliminated. James is the guy from Wakefield, MA.

We did get a winner with the Impossible Question: "The average home has 12 of these, and you got most for free." The answer was: PENS. Here's a preview of tomorrow's question: 68% of homes in the US have this. Have what? We'll take calls at 7:38am.

We're predicting Gladys Knight will get the boot on "Dancing With the Stars" tonight. We'll have results for you tomorrow.

Mike Lima from the Greater NB Career Center will have the Hot Jobs Report at 8:38am.

And have you ever had a Nightmare Neighbor? Someone who made your life miserable? We'll tell you about one that's been sent to jail and would love to hear your stories too.

Rainy Days and Mondays

When was the last time you drove to work in the rain? I don't know the answer but it certainly has been awhile.

Here we go with a new week. Everyone was back including our weather guy Dean Devore. Dean was in Las Vegas attending the National Association of Broadcasters convention and winning big at the poker tables. Way to go Deano!

On the show today we had a stumper on Movie Monday. In the 1975 movie "Tommy," which rocker played the preacher? The answer was Eric Clapton. What a strange movie that was. I remember walking out of that movie wondering....what did I just see?

The Impossible Question was a good one. "The average person has 12 of these in their home. 12 what?" Nobody got the right answer so we will try again tomorrow at 7:38am.

Neal brought up a great story he had heard over the weekend. B.J.'s Wholesale Club in Westborough got a delivery the other day marked "perishable," which is not unusual, they get plenty of perishables. When they noticed it was medical research, they called police. The box actually contained a woman's torse that was supposed to go to medical research. We were amazed and wondered which aisle you put that in at a BJ's Wholesale Club?

Also today we had some of the cast from New Bedford High School in. They're doing "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" this weekend.

On tomorrow's show we have a guest at 7:52am who will tell us the FDA is changing the food pyramid AGAIN! Timeline Tuesday is our Game of the Day at 6:38am and Lady Gaga gets ready to hand out "meat bandaids" at her concerts this summer. You read that right. Meat band aids. We'll have details tomorrow.

R.I.P. Dick

I was a big fan of Dick Clark. I think anyone in this business has looked up to that man at one time or another. I never had a chance to meet him but Neal did. Neal used to be the producer for John Lander at Mix in Boston and they made a trip to L.A. once and interviewed Dick. Neal said he was really a down-to-earth nice guy. I’m so glad to hear that because so many of the people we look up to in Hollywood are…..let’s just say “not nice.”

On today’s show we learned that Pepperoni is no longer #1 when it comes to pizza. Chicken has become the new favorite and it’s not just plain chicken. It includes preparations like barbecued, Buffalo chicken, Thai, Southwest, curry, chicken parmesan and chicken Caesar. Have you noticed? It never fails but this show always finds a way to talk about food.

The Impossible Question was fun today. It always is when we talk about men/women, husbands/wives. The question was about the #1 complaint that women have about their significant other. The calls included: leaving the toilet seat up, wet towels on the floor, hogging the remote control. The answer was: leaving the dishes in the sink.

Here’s a preview of tomorrow’s question…..it takes 6 to do this. Six times to do what? We’ll take calls at 7:38am.

If you love your 70s music we’ll play “Don’t Forget The Lyrics” at 6:38am.

Our movie critic Joanna Langfield will join us at 8:52am. Zach Efron stars in a new one this weekend.

And back to husbands/wives…..tomorrow we have a segment about BAD HABITS COUPLES FALL INTO

For men:
Control of the TV Channel Changer

For women:
Leave a mess of "female things" in the bathroom.

There’s more on the list. We’ll have that around 7am.

Tuesday

Sorry I didn't get an update done yesterday. It's school vacation week and with the Red Sox playing an early game, I had a chance to scoot out and watch my daughter play high school softball. It was a nice day in Wareham and a victory helped too!

On the show today we were talking one of the latest diet crazes. Brides-to-be are using Nasal Feeding Tubes to lose weight. It's called the "K E Diet" which promises rapid weight loss of 10 to 20 pounds in 10 days. You insert a feeding tube into your nose that runs to the stomach. You'll get a constant slow drip of protein and fat mixed with water that totals 800 calories a day. The fat is burned off leaving the muscle intact and you're not hungry for 10 days. This thing stays in your nose for 10 days! I'm reminded of a quote I heard the other day for brides, "The dress is supposed to fit you, not you fit the dress."

We had a nice chat with Barbaara Barnes, the author of "What's Great About I95 from Maine to Florida." Her website is interestinginterstates.com. It brought back memories for both Neal and me about trips to Florida with the family. ("Are we there yet?")

Have you ever noticed that a sandwich tastes better if someone else made it? I found a reason for that. It's because when you make the sandwich you have everything there on the counter and you become immune to the aroma of the food. Smell is a very important part of enjoying a meal. That got Neal going about his favorite sandwich----the Rueben. This guy always focuses on food!

We finally got a winner on the Impossible Question: 27% of us would love to take our family here for vacation. The answer? The moon. Not for me....but think about the great golf shot you could get off.

On tomorrow's show we'll have the Secret Sound Gamne at 6:38am, and a new Impossible Question at 7:38am.

The Hot Jobs Report is on at 8:38am. Mike Lima from the Greater New Bedford Career Center will have job openings for us.

And a new survey looks at the Top 10 Nicest Compliments for a woman:

1. You look like you've lost weight.
2. You have a nice smile.
3. You smell nice.
4. Nice hair.
5. That dress really suits you.
6. That color really suits you.
7. Love what you're wearing.
8. Your eyes are pretty.
9. You look slim.
10. You look gorgeous.

Maybe My Wife Isn't So Weird

I figured that would get your attention. My wife is a HUGE 3 Stooges fan. She saw the ad for the new movie weeks ago and said, “I’m there!” She’s always loved the Stooges and their slapstick comedy. Me? I can take it or leave it, maybe one of their shows. She’ll watch a marathon. Well, the new Stooges movie opens this weekend and I told Neal that my wife wanted to go and he figured she must be the only woman in the world. We opened the phones today and heard from two or three female fans who are planning to go this weekend. One lady is bringing her 19-year old daughter. It’s a girls night out with the 3 Stooges.

Our movie critic Joanna Langfield said Stooges fans should be happy with the movie. She likes the new movie “The Cabin in the Woods,” but did not like “Lockout.”

Another silly skit today was a trend from Twitter….replace band names with bacon. The list included: Mumford and Bacon, Red Hot Chilli Bacon, Guns and Bacon, Nickle Bacon, Black Eyed Bacon, etc.

Peter Abraham from the Boston Globe was our guest for a preview of the home opener. He admitted that they have problems, especially pitching. I asked him if he was in Fort Myers the night Terry Francona was their for an ESPN game. He said it was really strange to see Terry in khaki’s and a golf shirt. He also said it will be strange when ESPN does a game at Fenway because part of the deal is for the reporters to meet with the manager in the manager’s office. Bobby Valentine will be sitting at Terry’s old desk as they do the interview.

Here’s hoping you have a good weekend. Next week is the school vacation week. If you are travelling we wish you a safe trip and check in when you get back.

Hope I'm wrong

So……what do you think about the Red Sox? I’m not feeling it. I thought they made some changes and straightened things about after the September collapse but I’m not seeing it. Maybe I bought into the spin after September…but didn’t you expect more? I hope I have to eat this post in a week or so when they turn it around….but YIKES!

On today’s show:

• Rich was the winner on the Morning Quiz today. We were talking about TV characters and their dogs. If I said Dagwood Bumstead, the answer would be Daisy. What about Jed Clampett? Rich got it right away it was DUKE! Also on the list…Cindy Brady- Tiger, Bart Simpson-Santa’s Little Helper.
• I don’t know how this keeps happening but did ya hear? UCLA mistakenly told almost 900 students that they had been accepted to the university. Ooops! That was a mistake. They never made it and had to send out another letter explaining their mistake.
• Good Luck! A new survey shows the average job recruiter spends 6 seconds sizing up your resume. They also say pictures and graphics were found to be distracting and didn’t help your chances at all.
• On the local scene: there was a story in the Standard Times sports page about boys and girls competing against each other in swimming. The MIAA is meeting about this today but I think their hands are tied. If a school doesn’t offer a boys swim team, the boy has to have an opportunity to swim. Isn’t that part of Title IX?
• We also visited with Ryan and Cindy. They are sponsoring a Scholarship Dance Saturday night for the Andrew McCann Scholarship Fund. Andrew was the Voke Tech student who died in a tragic accident this January.

Tomorrow morning we will have the results of the Bruins first playoff game with Washington. I pick the Bruins in 5, Jack and Neal say Boston in 6. We’ll have Hockey Trivia at 6:38am.

We’ll hear from our movie critic Joanna Langfield at 8:52am with a look at what’s new.

Friday the 13th tomorrow! Good luck with that.

And we’re working on these stories: Butt-dialing lands criminal behind bars; there’s a new hands-free umbrella to keep you dry. (Looks like a bubble on your head); and what do your wedding colors say about you?

We’ll talk with you in the morning!

Monday

I hope it was a very nice Easter for you or maybe a Passover celebration with family. It was strange for us this year. My oldest son is in the Navy and this was the first time one of the kids didn’t make it home for a holiday. It felt strange but it was nice to Skype with him after dinner.

Today was the debut of the new line up here at WBSM. We were supposed to talk with Mike Gallagher at 8:22am but he says he tried to get through but all he got was a rapid busy signal. He then called my cell and got the same thing. I think there was a problem with his cell because neither one of those lines rang. We’ll try again tomorrow. He gave us a nice welcome on his show after 9.

We also have the Mike Huckabee Show now from 1 to 3pm and Phil Paleologos is on from 3 to 6.

On today’s show:

• The U.S. penny is costing 2.4 cents to produce and distribute. Neal and I think it’s a waste. We hardly use pennies any more. Last year the U.S. lost $60 MILLION on pennies!!!!
• I have to admit I’m a little worried about the Red Sox. I know I’m the one that always preaches that it’s a marathon and not a sprint but we need Daniel Bard back as the closer.
• Congrats to Henry! He was the winner of Movie Monday today. I had a sound bite from “Big” with Tom Hanks from 1988. Tomorrow we’ll play TimeLine Tuesday and go back 2 decades or so.
• No winner today with the Impossible Question. “Only 15% of grocery shoppers do this. Do what? We’ll take more of your calls tomorrow at 7:38am.
• Also today I was talking about Betty White’s new show “Off Their Rockers.” NBC played it again this weekend. What a funny show! Seniors play pranks on young people. Check it out this week. I think it’s on Wednesday.

The Bruins have released their playoff schedule. They'll play the Washington Capitals.

Thursday at Boston at 7:30pm.
Saturday at Boston at 3pm.
Monday 4/16 @ Washington at 7pm.
Thursday 4/19 @ Washington at 7pm.
Then Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday the 25th if needed. GO B'S!!!!

Play ball!

Can’t wait for BASEBALL!!! I still love to hear baseball on the radio. Memories of listening at the camp ground, the beach, while sitting outside in the back yard. I also think Joe Castiglione is one of the best in the business. The Red Sox are on this afternoon! Then they have a day off. I always hated that as a kid. You get all excited….they play one game….then a break. I know the reason they do it is in case they have to postpone opening day….but still it feels weird.

We made our predictions today. I think the Red Sox will win the Wild Card. I think the Yankees are set to win the division again. Jack thinks it’ll be the Yankees, Rays and then the Red Sox and they won’t make the playoffs. Neal agreed. We shall see.

We had fun with the Impossible Question today. The question was: A babies first words are usually “mommy” or “daddy.” What comes third? Paula had the correct answer. It was “more.” That got us talking about things our kids say. Paula has an 11 year old and a 14 year old so I was talking about teenage angst. That’s when you ask them to do anything and all you get is a huge sigh. “Can you feed the dog?” The reply is “awwww” with a huge sigh. It’s like you’re asking them to carry a load of bricks!

We had a list of 8 Things Every Kid Should Experience:
1. Being part of a team.
2. Camping
3. Chores
4. Snow
5. Farm Life
6. A lemonade stand
7. Flying a kite
8. Bowling

And our guest today was Michael Gwynne of the Pawtucket Red Sox. They start a new season tonight. Check out pawsox.com for all of their events this year.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about Home Run Calls. If you were a baseball announcer, what would your signature home run call be?

We’ll talk to some folks from the Buttonwood Park Zoo. They have some great events coming up for school vacation week. That’s at 8:22am.

And our movie critic Joanna Langfield will join us at 8:52am to look at new movies this weekend.

I'm back!

Sorry I didn’t get to the blog the past few days. It’s been a little hectic here with my other duties at the radio station as we get ready for some changes next week.

Yesterday was also strange as I had to go to Hawthorne Medical twice for an X-ray, once in the morning to get a dye and then later in the morning for the actual X-ray or Bone Scan. I can add the X-ray machine to the list of places I’ve fallen asleep. They strapped me into the machine and said it would be 20 minutes for the test. Then, before I knew it, I was being pulled out. I don’t know where the 20 minutes went. I guess I was sleepy.

We had some fun this week with obnoxious laughs. It started with an interview with Maria Menunos. I didn’t know she had such a weird laugh. Neal had me compare it to Fran Drescher’s laugh from “The Nanny.” Maria is worse! Then Dolly sent us a You Tube link. I had forgotten about Janice on “Friends.” In out giant “Laugh Off” this morning Maria Menunos was still the winner/loser.

We had a story today about The Little Chocolate Shop in Yorkshire, England offering a stay in their “chocolate suite.” It features edible chocolate furniture. It’s only $132 a night but the offer does end Sunday.

Are you going to check out the new Betty White Show tonight? NBC presents “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” where seniors play pranks on young people. Should be fun.

The Red Sox open the 2012 season tomorrow! We’ll make our picks tomorrow morning as to where we think the team will finish. What do you think? 1st place? Wildcard? Miss the playoffs again?
